What Counts as Commercial Use?
"Commercial use" means any use where money is generated, a brand is promoted, or the content is made for a paying client. If any of the following apply, you need a Commercial License:
Rule of thumb: if you're unsure, choose Commercial. The upgrade cost is always less than copyright infringement damages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my YouTube channel considered commercial use?
If you have YouTube monetization enabled (AdSense), yes — that is commercial use and requires a Commercial License. If your channel has zero monetization and generates no income, a Personal License covers it up to 10,000 lifetime streams on that content.
What if I upload the song but disable ads?
If you have no monetization enabled, no brand deals, and no other revenue associated with that content, a Personal License applies. The moment you enable monetization or associate the content with any paid promotion, you need a Commercial License.
I'm making music for a client — which license?
Commercial License, always. Any work created in exchange for payment — even a single client project — constitutes commercial use.
Can I use a Personal License for my SoundCloud or Bandcamp?
If you are not selling the track or generating any revenue from it, a Personal License covers this. If you are charging for downloads or streams, upgrade to Commercial.
I already bought a Personal License. Can I upgrade?
Contact the artist directly through their StemGod profile to purchase a Commercial License upgrade. The Personal License remains valid for non-commercial use in the meantime.
What happens if I use a Personal License commercially?
Your license is void and you are in breach of the license agreement. This constitutes copyright infringement under U.S. copyright law and can result in statutory damages of up to $150,000 per infringement. Always purchase the right tier.
Do I need to credit the artist?
Attribution is encouraged but not required unless the artist specifies otherwise in their pack listing. Always check the listing for any attribution requirements.
Can I use the stems in an AI music tool or training dataset?
No. Both Personal and Commercial licenses explicitly prohibit using StemGod content to train, fine-tune, or develop any AI or machine learning model without separate written consent from the licensor.
